Shy-Anne Hovorka

Indigenous Music

Originally a member of Matachewan First Nation and now a member of Red Rock Indian Band, Shy-Anne Hovorka is an award-winning Ojibwe singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, educator, and environmental advocate from Northwestern Ontario. With a career spanning over a decade, she has used her music to inspire social change, promote Indigenous culture, and raise awareness about environmental and humanitarian issues.

Her discography includes five albums, with her third album, Interwoven Roots, earning six Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in 2012. Her 2014 release, Bones, won three APCMAs, including Best Country Album and Entertainer of the Year. Her song “Can’t Change the World” was featured in the television series Blackstone and performed at the 2010 World Interfaith G8 Summit.

In 2022, Shy-Anne released her fifth album, And Then…, as a tribute to the children who died in residential schools. The album was distributed by donation, with proceeds supporting the Residential School Survival Society. One of the tracks, “Crying Bones,” was co-written with her young son, reflecting her commitment to family and intergenerational healing.

Beyond her music career, Shy-Anne holds an Honours Bachelor of Music, a Bachelor of Education, and a Master of Education. Her work embodies the principle of "Two-Eyed Seeing,"" integrating Indigenous and Western knowledge systems to benefit all communities.

Shy-Anne continues to perform across Canada, collaborating with artists and symphony orchestras, and remains dedicated to nurturing youth, preserving Indigenous languages, and advocating for environmental stewardship.
